Not much news.

Karl's Blog. Stardate Blah Blah Blah,

Currently watching England versus Portugal in the second round of the Euro Cup. I'm not going to mention any details in case someone hasn't seen it yet and wishes to watch a latter rebroadcast.

Anyway, it appears I might actually be able to go to my family reunion (mother's side) this year. I wanted to go, but, I doubted that my circumstances would allow me to do so. However, my family (again my mother's side) going well out of their way in order for me to attend. So I guess I'm San Francisco bound. One week stay.

My last reunion was coincidentally the summer after my highschool graduation. Which was god knows how long ago. So, I haven't seen these people in many years. We're gonna be a bit older. I'm afraid that will also mean alot more drinking since we (my age group) are now of legal age in the United States. God knows what they think of me now. They thought I was an alcoholic then. Must have been due to me finishing off a 40oz. and their numerous shots, yet, appearing seemingly unfazed. So it will be interesting to say the least.

My departure will be early in the morning of Thursday, July 8th. Which means I'll still be able to attend Becky's going away party (she's heading to Middle Earth for a year). More importantly, I'll still be able to pick Jen up from the airport when she makes her triumphant return to Vancouver. Which means I'll have to phone/email Sarah, Vanessa, Dave, and anyone else that stated interest in welcoming Jen back at the airport. Is anyone up to the task of coordinating this endeavour (coughVanessacough)? I'm still shaken about running an ill-fated History-French Club BZZR Garden.

I'll probably see everyone on Friday for Becky's going away shindig. Which reminds me, Carlos is in town and I'm determined to have Carlos and Vanessa meet face to face. They remind me so much of each other it creeps me out. Maybe the world will end. Most likely, they will both stare at me and reconsider why I'm friends with them.

I'm going back to being a shut-in.

Whatever's Old Is New Again.

Test Pattern, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 . . .

A few things have changed since I first posted my thoughts regarding the radio scene amidst the demise of XFM. What changes you ask? Well let me break it down:

- MOJO

Initially under the gimmick of "radio for men". However, the format has been altered yet again. Now it is another sports radio station. So instead of being "The Man Show" meets radio, MOJO is now "The Best Damn Sports Show" meets radio. Uhm . . . yay? I thought the station had a following? It sounded unique. Oh, it cut down a potential viewership by catering primarily towards a male demographic? And they lost further listeners by dumping Tom Lykus? So much promise but handled poorly you say? Where have I heard this before? Oh yeah, XFM. Some how I don't believe MOJO has as much sports cred as TEAM 1040. Of course I'd have to find some one that actually listens to MOJO to find out.

- 104.9 Clear FM?

They finally settled upon a new format. I guess Christmas radio just isn't that relevant after December 25th. So three cheers for adult contemporary, soft rock, and all that jazz. So instead of being the next coming of Coast 1040, it's the second coming of KISS FM. Nice & safe radio for the masses. Awww . . .

And now the heart of the matter.

- 99.3 The Fox

The Fox has changed their format some what. It is a new CFOX. How did they revamp themselves? By reverting back to their old format prior to the arrival of XFM. I'll listen to their ads where fans congratulate the station on their "new format" and I'm left flabbergasted. Why? Because it's not new! They went back to their old fucking format!!! Since when is this progression? I thought the whole purpose was to distinguish CHUM's 2 Vancouver-based rock stations from each other. Now both stations broadcast similar programming. Sure Rock 101.1 doesn't play nu-metal or pop-punk (yet), but, most of the time you can't tell the difference between the two CHUM brands. Do I still listen to The Fox? Sometimes. Mainly, for Alain Cross' "The Ongoing History of New Music". I try to make time to listen to this program. I like it that much. As for other programs offered on 99.3, not so much. Sometimes I'll tune in on Jenna Chow by chance and get to hear snippets of her time slot. However, it's more by accident then by design. Or maybe I'll listen to The 90's @ 9 when I brush my teeth. But that has dwindled now that I purchased my discman that can play mp3 data discs. So instead of having to wade through a plethora of crummy music for that one song I may possibly enjoy, I can program over 200 songs that I know I like and set the damn machine to "random". I can be my own music programmer and DJ. Having control over something in some capacity no matter how small is always fun some how.

Yay.

My Thoughts On The Demise of XFM "Vancouver's New Rock Alternative" (originally posted Dec. 12, 2003)

Test Pattern, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 . . .

On one fateful day, Lianne walked into the AUS Office and informed everyone that was present that XFM is now, or at least temporarily, "All Christmas Music, All The Time". We were all shocked. Not that anyone liked the station or will miss it, but, surprised at the sudden format change. I mean the owners must have been losing $$$ big time to make this decision.

I remember the buzz and aura created upon the arrival of this station. To promote it, much like today with the Christmas format, the station was blaring "alternative music" with no commercial 24/7. It was nice. I was anticipating the second coming of the old Coast 1040 format. I am probably revealing my old age at this moment. Way back when 1040 on the AM dial had Coast. Its format consisted of what is now termed "alternative", although back then I remember calling it either "underground" or "college" music. This was a time when "The Fox" and "101 CFMI" were pretty much the same, but, "The Fox" played way more metal and hard rock. A time when "LG73" was the #1 station in the lower mainland and almost all their DJ's were named "Hitman 'Something'". Sure, CiTR was around, but, I was not aware of its existence and could not get it on my crappy radio.

So this was the type of anticipation and expectation I had for XFM. I wanted a radio station that would play underground cutting edge music. What did I get when the format and DJ's were in place? The '90s type Z95.3 version of 99.3 The Fox. What the fuck!?! It blew! Their DJs were annoying and NOT FUNNY. Perhaps during the twilight hours they might play the obscure shit I'm into. Nope.

I'll give an example:

My ex-coworker was working the graveyard shift at his other job, the detox in the downtown eastside. He's listening to the radio to pass the time. XFM has requests because that's what radio stations do to fill dead air at that time. Being that he was an old-school punker from Montreal, he wanted some truly rare track, plus he too wanted to test how really "alternative" XFM claimed to be. So he requests some Killing Joke. Anything from Killing Joke, he didn't care what song; he just wanted to hear some Killing Joke. He was denied. Apparently, Killing Joke is not "radio friendly." Radio friendly? The only people listening at this time of the day are other graveyard shift workers!!! "Alternative" and "radio friendly"? What kind of "alternative" radio station was this?

XFM played the same songs, all time. The same songs you would hear on The Fox, Z95, and the Beat, not to mention the American stations. They were pretty much Z95 without the R&B. How sad is that? They couldn't even emulate 107.7 The End from Seattle. Everything XFM tried, both The Fox and The End did better.

So, what did XFM Bring to the table?

Music? Nope. The music selection was what everyone else was playing. Even their spoofs and parodies sucked. As stated above, it was done by other radio stations and it was done properly by these competitors.

DJs? Nope. Quite frankly, I hated almost every single one of them. The exception being Pam Stevens, who was from Z95 but I remember her for her cameos in the now defunct "Complaint Department" on Rogers Cable Access. Why do I hate them? They kept reminding of those people that were not cool in high school, but, kept insisting they were. Not in a good way either mind you. More like they tried to be funny by belittling people and the only ones laughing were them. Bastards. They were not funny. As much as they tried, they could not make me laugh. The most guilty of this offence was their morning show. Oh the pain I wanted to inflict upon that duo. They lacked innuendo, subtext, satire, or even sarcasm. How were they friends with George something-or-other from Much? Again, emulating another radio station and failing miserably. They were not Larry and Willy. As old as they were, they made me laugh. Crash and Pepper were/are/will always be lame. At least one-half of that duo is of the air. The other got a job at The Fox when Larry and Willy jumped ship. Damn. At least I can listen to Jack FM in the mornings.

If I were to give an analogy to illustrate my point, XFM was the "Vanilla Ice" of "alternative" rock stations. It started strong with a lot of hype and hoopla. However, when it came down to it, it had no street cred whatsoever.

Was there any good to come from the XFM experiment? Yes. This station forced all the other radio stations to re-examine themselves and adapt. It also, showed that there are untapped listening markets in the Greater Vancouver Area.

Who changed?

The Fox & Rock 101:

For the longest time, these 2 stations fought and battled for the rock audience in Vancouver. XFM came and threatened to blow them both away. This could have occurred. Unfortunately for XFM, but, fortunately for us CHUM bought CFOX, CFMI, CKLG, & CKNW. Each of these stations were allowed to revamp their identities (perhaps not CKNW). The Fox & Rock 101 were now allowed to chase after 2 separate demographics in regards to rock music. Rock 101 was now concentrating on an older audience with classic rock. However, The Fox was now focused upon the younger "New Rock" audience. Similar to before, minus the Led Zep, ACDC, etc. Furthermore, their programming was far superior to XFM. In addition to Larry and Willy, there were shows that catered to all niches. I mean they were playing hip hop on The Fox! I never thought I would see the day that would happen. Not just the odd Eminem or Snoop track either. They have a show dedicated to it. I think it is/was hosted by one of the guys in the old "Northern Touch" video. Now dear to my heart, they have their punk content hosted by Jenna Chow (she still doing it?). She actually tries to pimp local, Canadian, underground, and new acts. I'm sorry, but, you were not going hear bands like Bouncing Souls, Tiger Army, cub, or Young Canadians on XFM. They might not be "radio friendly" enough. And by far my favourite segment is this show that originates from Toronto. "The Ongoing History of New Music". This show brings everything full circle. It illustrates the influences and evolution of today's music and musical trends. Of course I'm a history major and into that sort of shit.

New stations?

Mojo:

Previously LG73 "Today's Hit Music", "Today's Best Music Mix", and for a brief period of time CKNW2. This station has gone through a lot since being the #1 radio station in town and having Z95 steal your format and audience, whereby, getting fucked royally. Now it is radio for men. I liked it when they had Tom Lykis. I went to the listening party. You know, for a sausage fest I sure saw a lot of tits that night. I even have pictures if anyone wants to look. At least, Bill Courage is working again. But, basically "The Man Show" meets radio. No one's thought of this sooner?

The Beat:

For the longest time, the only outlets for hip hop on Radio was via CFRO, CKZZ, Citr, and the American stations. So basically, you had to wait for the hip hop specific shows on college and coop radio or you needed good enough reception to get the American stations. As for Z95, my younger brother had a rule of thumb: If it is getting airplay on Z95, then he is no longer allowed to listen to that song no more. After many grueling years of petitioning and organization, Vancouver now has a hip hop station. Hopefully, they will learn from XFM and not fuck up. Plus, their old school lunch programming is pretty funkin' awesome.

Jack FM:

I believe someone said, "Holy shit! LG73 moved to FM!!!" The radio station of my youth is back. Sure there is no Constable Bob and his Morning Zoo, but, Larry and Willy will suffice. I guess the station's original KISS FM baby-boomer fan base is dying out.

TEAM Radio:

Coast 1040 has finally settled upon a radio format that may stick around and make money. Sports all day, all the time. If I need to listen to a game not offered by CKNW, then I can tune into here. I'm happy.

5 Favourite Bands/Musical Artist/Whatever

Test Pattern, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 . . .

Today I was helping my buddy Dave lay wood panel on the floor of the rec room, and get it ready for the "Barnston Island BBQ Bash" (ya better all come; I'm slaving away for your enjoyment ;p). Whilst I was doing this very activity, I thought about Melissa's B-Day celebration at the Cambie. Specifically, she asked me about my "5 Favourite Bands" of all time. This question really stumped me. I've known and loved many a musical act throughout my many begotten years on this here plain of existence. Who do I include? Who do I exclude? Being drunk and very tired, my initial response to her was way off. For anyone interested, in no particular order, that night my picks were:

- The Beatles

- The Beach Boys

- WEEZER

- BEASTIE Boys

- Nirvana

Now, I'm not saying that I have no love for these bands, but, upon further pondering I cannot whole heartedly abide with this list. 2 will remain though. Those 2 picks were easy, and then and even to this moment, they were automatic buys into my top 5. I will get into why further down in this post. As for why I must drop the remaining 3? Well, As much as I love them, my love for these other musical icons just overshadow the last 3 listed above.

WEEZER:

I adore this band. I've been through a lot with this band. My friends and I trekked all the way to Seattle to be in the presence of them. My last haircut occurred the day prior to their Vancouver concert. Being forced to do so for a family engagement, and wanting to so dearly don a mushroom bob cut for the concert, I have not trimmed my hair for over 3 years since. They were the subject of my French language presentation in grade 12. I get excited when other people acknowledge their liking for the Pinkerton album. I was sad when Matt Sharpe and WEEZER parted ways. I geeked out like a gushing fanboy upon the news of Matt Sharpe and Rivers Cuomo talking to each other again after all these years. They are what I enjoy about music today. However, I cannot put them in my Top 5. In a Top 10? Oh hellz yeah.

BEASTIE Boys:

Prior to my days as a headbanger, I was really into rap. Not Hip Hop, but, rap. It was the 1980s. Sure the word Hip Hop existed, but, on a mass scale, this music genre was recognized as rap. Yet, even at that age, I liked a plethora of music. With my family friends, I was the odd one that liked stuff outside of rap and R&B (I still don't like the current bastardization they title as R&B). Well, except for my god-bro P.J., but he was a full on metal head, dodgy reputation included. Being that I grew up in Richmond, B.C., Canada, there were 2 customs for kids those days. Skateboarding and rap. All my friends could skateboard, but, I being awkwardly taller than everyone else and possessing no sense of balance what so ever, I never could skateboard myself. Closest I'd get would be what people call "road luging" nowadays down a hill and swerving to avoid cars. Then here was this band that knew how to both board and rap. Sure, down in the USA they were played all over MTV, but, up here they still had an underground feel. Atleast with their first 2 albums they were. As I grew my appreciation for rap (and later hip hop) went into the down low. However, it still remained and would take shape. Along with this change, the BEASTIE Boys grew and changed as well. While most people would slag off the Check Your Head album, it opened up what hip hop can be for me. Despite my admiration for Da Boys, I still leave them off my list of 5.

Nirvana:

How many bands do you know kicked Michael Jackson off #1 of the Billboard Charts back when he actually was still the "King of Pop"? Thought so. This band transitioned myself from childhood to my teen years. Did they spark a revolution? Maybe not. But they did bring into fruition what their forebearers created. If anyone awakened my senses to music, it would have to be this band. Being young, full of supposed angst, and a sense of disillusionment how can I not love this band? Then 1994 happened. I was so depressed for so long. A combination of that and my own personal issues, Nirvana symbolized passion. Every experience was intense and to its extreme. Everyone still waits for the next Nirvana. There will never be another Nirvana. Yet, still not in my top 5 list.

Now you may ask yourself, "Must he ramble? Can't he just get on with it already?" To relieve this hunger for knowledge, I will get to my top 5 list. They are as follows, in no particular what so ever:

The Beatles:

The first of my automatic buys. Growing up in my home, there were 2 mainstays in regards to music: 1) The Beatles and 2) Elvis Presley. To put things into perspective, I kinda find Elvis annoying. So it was The Beatles all the way. Their catalogue ranged from poppy love songs to ruckus riot inducers to pieces of musical masterpieces. Unlike most bands in their and even in our day, they grew beyond the formula that got them on top. They were that good. Listen to an album. Any album. Hell, watch one of their films. And if you're a history buff like me, please watch "Anthology".

The Beach Boys:

My other automatic buy. In the 1980s there was one feel good band that were still going strong after how many decades. Despite their poppy sound, if you were to closely examine their early songs, you'll discover just how complex their tunes were. The bottomline was that they were able keep tight knit harmony. I swear, just listen to the vocals alone, it's mind blowing. Also, unlike their peers at the time, they wrote, performed, and produced their own material. They were an oddity in the music industry. If you don't believe they are still relevant in music, go take a listen to WEEZER. No Beach Boys, no WEEZER. I mean come on, they only made the most influential album ever. If it weren't for "Pet Sounds", The Beatles wouldn't have to be forced their most experimental and influential material ever.

The Cure:

Dark? Check. Moody? Check. Can their songs make you cheerful and depressed at the same time? Check. Robert Smith and company are those guys that can just be so raw and vulnerable. They're haunting, ethereal, and charismatic. I've always liked this band. Theirs songs would just get stuck in my head and I'd welcome the experience with open arms. It's not the fake compassion that you get with a lot of bands (eg. staind, theory of a defaultback, etc). You have a sense that it's real. My compulsion to do a geeky dance when The Cure comes on is quite unexplainable. I can't help it. I have to close my eyes and "feel" The Cure.

The Police:

The talent held within this trio is mind boggling. For a while they ruled the nest of the music industry. They forced the Americans to acknowledge that there is good music from Britain, yet again. Sure upon closer examination of their songs you can find some sort of "stalker" subtext, but, what other soundtrack would you want whilst stal . . . err . . . nevermind. In a time when New Wave was gaining predominance, The Police exposed the masses to outside influences upon "rock & roll" music. They brought elements of ska, reggae, punk, and jazz to say the least. Growing up in scene where in order to stick out, you don't emulate the others around you, you had to be different from everyone else, The Police flourished by adopting a sound that fit them and by outplaying those around them. A crazy Yank on drums. A jazz aficionado session guitarist. The haunting vocals and baseline of a man named "Sting". The emotion they invest into their songs and performances can be seen through the violent interactions that the trio inflict upon each other. Even though they don't exist as a band anymore, they still are friends. Each member have been successful in their respective careers. However, if given the chance, they can still be better than you. A feat witnessed at a wedding where they were all present. A friend drunkenly suggested they play, since the band wasn't playing and all the instruments were still there. Needless to say, to all present, it was as if they never went on hiatus. They're that damn good.

Johnny Cash:

The man in bucking black. He was "rock & roll" when it was still music that those pesky African Americans played. He was contemporaries with the likes of Elvis, Roy Orbison, Carl Perkins, and Jerry Lee Lewis. And he was still considered the bad ass. He's still considered a bad ass. He was among the forefathers of the "Renegade" movement in country music. Country's equivalent to punk. To put things into perspective, they rocked harder, got more girls, did more drugs, drank harder, fought more, and partied harder then ANYONE in punk music. He sang about happiness, depression, violence, redemption, murder, and God. Each subject still touched you, whether you wanted it to or not. His voice could scare the bejeebus outtta ya. There was no persona per se. Just a man and his music. Do you know anyone else who can cover Nine Inch Nails and make you believe he owns that song and think maybe Nine Inch Nails might have been covering him all along? Thought not.

Go back to your lives.

Barnston Island BBQ Bash (OMG BIBB)

Karl's Blog. Stardate Blah Blah Blah,

Here I go again advertising another party for all of you lovely people. All are welcome, so please come. This party will serve as a birthday celebration for my friend Dave, a year end wrap party for my soccer club, and more importantly, an excuse to just eat some BBQ and drink some alcohol.

Other than the food and refreshments, there will be a hot tub, a games room (with a bevy of game consoles and games {mainly old school and a PS2, but, I'll try to confirm which consoles will be there}), a pool table outside a la Drew Carey, and a basketball hoop. So there should be plenty to do.

Random notes:

- it is in Surrey, hence the trip will be lengthy (except for those residing within a closer vicinity)

- yes there is a ferry service, but it's free

- stay as long as you want, but, if you're not off by midnight, you're stuck on the island till the morning

- it is an herb farm. Not those kind of "herbs". So no farm animals in the way of cattle. Although, there are chickens, a rabbit, 3 dogs, a cat, and the neighbours have horses that roam.

- a map and directions to get to the party will be available immediately underneath this blog posting

- a copy of the original invite can be seen below

-----

Hey, everybody! It's time for another BBQ!

This one's going to be a little different than usual, though, because it's

not going to be held at the McKinlays for once (bless 'em for hosting

everything else...). No, this time, I'm setting it up at my place, out on

our farm on the magical, mystical island that nobody believes I live on.

And, it's going to encompass a few things:

(1) The DSBH soccer team year-end wrap party, which we've still gotta have

(Chris Gat, get off that island and come to this one).

(2) My birthday (another year enjoyed and, ultimately, wasted).

(3) The mass consumption of animal flesh and intoxicants (take that...

people... who don't like... er... those things...).

Oh, before I forget, here are the details:

Saturday, June 12, 2004

4pm - 12 midnight

Rain or shine

Open invite AKA "Everyone is welcome"

An RSVP would be nice...

There will be burgers, hot dogs, salad, and beer, provided. If you want

anything else or something special in the way of food or drink, however,

bring it yourself. Oh, and the HOT TUB will be running (likely with cool

water during the day, and warm during the evening), so bring trunks or

whatever to soak in, if you want.

I've included a lovely, hand-drawn map as an attachment to this invitation

that shows you how to get to Barnston Island. It's in PDF form, so if you

have problems with it, or can't open it, send me a quick reply with your questions.

So, yeah. Anyone who knows me will tell you this is rare as I NEVER host

anything out here, so I hope you'll be able to make it out this BBQ. Oh,

and if you're having any doubts, I think Jason McKinlay was suggesting

getting a rotisserie and cooking something good on a spit, so you don't want

to miss that, either. =)

But, yeah. Hope to see you here!

Regards,

David Hoffmann

Hope to see you all there. Unless you're going to hang with Paige, then go party with her. The more sane people for her to hang with, the better.

"Lets get retar . . . err . . . developmentally disabled!!!"

Karl's Blog. Stardate Blah Blah Blah,

By now I'm sure that you all have heard about the big political controversy that has yet again plagued the province of British Columbia. If not, then get caught up here, here, here, and here.

For better analyses of this story, check the following voices that matter on the subject:

Spencer

Quinn

Also, if these individuals ever add their two cents on the subject, then check them out as well:

Dave

Dan

Gerald

Jackie

Trevor

Anyway, what do I have to say? My breakdown of this whole situation is as follows:

If it weren't during the middle of a federal campaign, there essentially would be no news coverage. Face it, it is true. It was a personal email issued to a particular group that the offer of getting inebriated and hanging out with said author would be appreciated. Sure not everyone on the "list" are of the same political affiliation, but, the invitation was open for all. The comments aimed at the other political parties were in jest and not to be taken seriously. Were they in bad taste and in bad timing? Well yes. However, sarcasm is hard to convey in text format. Perhaps if the author were to have utilized italics font or maybe even the use of quotation marks, then maybe the joke aspect would have been better understood.

I mean would the Conservatives really "come sit in a corner and hate gay people and immigrants and social programs and basically anything that's reasonable or good?" Some of them maybe, but, all of them? Lets examine this closely.

- Anyone can sit in a corner.

- Hating gay people? They don't all hate gay people. Although, the average Joe would not know it upon closer examination of the actual make-up of their voting body. Especially them good ol' Alliance boys.

- Hating immigrants? Hell, some of them even are immigrants. All of them are from immigrant backgrounds. Even the First Nations people (that pesky land bridge between Alaska and Asia eons ago). So they can't all hate immigrants. Just the ones that came after them and supposedly ruining our economy and other stuff.

- Hating social programs? Have Conservatives ever had a problem with social programs historically? Uhm . . . never mind.

- Basically hating anything that's reasonable or good? Now that would paint the Conservative Party as just being plain evil. Even if that were the case, they'd atleast make an evil laugh or cackle upon reading that statement.

As for the NDP, would they really come and bitch out the Liberal candidate? Well yeah. Not all of them mind you. Just the really vocal ones.

Now regarding the usage of the word "retarded". The proper definition of the word is that it is an adjective meaning underdeveloped, especially mentally. It derives from the transitive verb "retard". Which means to make slow or late, keep back, or impede the development of. By using it as a euphemism for drunkenness, then one essentially impedes their mental developmental capacity. Thus making the statement correct in its usage. Also, it is in reference to a song that is currently popular and on the airwaves by Black Eyed Peas.

The fact that I know the author of the email and consider him a friend makes my opinion biased no matter how hard I try to be objective. He has paid for this by losing his position. He took it as a man. That's the way politics goes I guess. Which sucks.

Now, would this really affect the way I would have voted? No. I have no particular allegiance to either party. With the structure of the federal system, I'm at a bind as to voting for a party's platform or for the best possible candidate for my federal riding. If the two mesh, great. If not, then the latter.

As for "Deep Throat"? I have my suspicions as to who the individual(s) may be. I won't name names. It's not my department. I'm not that petty. If ya ask me in private, then sure, I'll shoot the proverbial shit with ya. Although, I may make you sign a confidentiality clause agreement and make sure you're not bugged.

But still, I think this whole thing is a little "developmentally disabled."

Later Days.

End Tranmission.
